    What's Clogging Your Tub Drain

Hair + soap scum at the trap

The #1 cause. Hair catches on the pop-up stopper and slowly builds a mat inside the P-trap. Soap scum binds it together.

    Overflow tube buildup

The vertical tube behind the overflow plate collects scum over years. Sometimes that's where the actual blockage is, not the drain itself.

    Older cast-iron corrosion

In homes with original cast-iron drains, corrosion narrows the pipe internally. Recurring clogs mean it's time to camera and assess.

    Branch drain issue

If tub AND nearby bathroom sink are both slow, the problem is in the shared branch drain — not the tub itself.

    Standing Water In Your Tub?

Don't pour chemical drain cleaner in it — that damages pipes and rarely clears hair. Call us.

Clogged Tub Drain — Common Questions

How much does clearing a clogged tub drain cost?
Our $99 service fee applies toward the work. A typical tub drain clog (hair and soap scum at the trap or overflow) is a straightforward job. If we find a deeper blockage in the branch line or stack, we show you and give an itemized quote before continuing.
What causes a bathtub drain to clog?
Almost always hair and soap scum building up inside the trap and drain. Kids' bath toys, loose strands of floss, and even small objects can also catch in the trap. Chemical drain cleaners sometimes break down the blockage short-term but damage pipes over time — we don't recommend them.
Can I clear a tub drain myself?
You can try: remove the overflow plate and pop-out stopper, pull visible hair out with a drain claw or bent coat hanger. If the water still won't drain, the clog is past the trap and you need professional tools. Don't use chemical drain cleaners — they corrode pipes and aren't effective on hair/soap buildup.
Will you need to tear open my tub surround?
No — in 95%+ of cases we clear tub drains through the existing drain opening or overflow. The only time we'd need access is a structural pipe problem behind the wall, and we'd tell you about that before doing anything. Camera inspection first, plan second.
Is a slow-draining tub the same as a fully clogged one?
Different stages of the same problem. Slow drains mean buildup is narrowing the pipe — it will eventually clog fully. Clearing it early is cheaper and less damaging than waiting for a backup.
