Pouring water into the pit until the float lifts is the only honest test, and it takes minutes. We check that the pump starts, moves water, and shuts off cleanly, and that the check valve holds so the water does not simply run back.
Repair or replace, said plainly
A stuck float or a clogged intake is a repair. A motor that has burned out, or a pump long past its service life, is a replacement, and we will tell you which one you are looking at rather than selling the bigger job by default.
The discharge line, which is usually the real problem
A pump can be perfect and the basement still floods if the discharge freezes, is crushed, or dumps water close enough to the foundation that it comes straight back. Where the water goes matters as much as the pump.

How often should a sump pump be tested?
At least once before storm season and again in spring. It takes a bucket of water and a minute. A pump that sat dry all summer is the one most likely to fail in October, and testing is the only way to find that out on your schedule instead of the weather's.
How long does a sump pump last?
Commonly seven to ten years, though how hard it works matters more than its age. A pump in a wet basement that runs weekly wears out faster than one that runs twice a year. If yours is near that range and has never been serviced, it is worth testing now.
Why does my sump pump keep running?
Usually a float stuck in the on position, a check valve letting water flow back into the pit so it pumps the same water repeatedly, or genuinely high groundwater. The first two are repairs. The third means talking about capacity and drainage.
Do I need a battery backup sump pump?
It depends on what is in your basement and whether your street loses power in storms. A backup matters most where a failure means finished space or a furnace under water. We will give you a straight answer for your house rather than a blanket recommendation.
My basement flooded but the pump works. What happened?
Most often the discharge: a frozen or blocked line, or water being dumped so close to the foundation that it returns. It can also be water arriving faster than the pump is sized for. That is why we look at the whole path, not just the pump.
