Common Navien Error Codes

The most common startup fault. Gas valve, flame rod, venting, or low gas pressure.
The unit sees a flame signal when there should not be one.
The unit lit and then lost the flame. Flame rod, gas pressure, or combustion air.
Scale or low water flow pushes the exchanger past its safe temperature. Usually a descale.
A sensor or wiring fault. Straightforward diagnostic and part replacement.
Flue temperature over its safe limit, usually the same scale and flow problem behind E016.
A safety limit device has opened or cannot be read.
Abnormal gas pressure, common on propane with a low tank or a failing regulator. Licensed diagnosis.
The combustion fan is not holding the speed the board expects. Often a dirty intake filter or a worn fan.
A blocked vent or intake, or abnormal air pressure: snow, ice, a nest, or condensate.
The recirculation pump is not operating as expected.
The unit cannot trust its reading of how much water is moving.
The board flagged a fault in itself or in a part it monitors. We diagnose before replacing a board.
The unit is telling you scheduled maintenance is due.
How to Read Your Navien Display
- 1. Look at the front panel. The error code shows as an "E" followed by a 3-digit number (e.g., E003).
- 2. Write it down exactly. "E003" vs "E030" point to very different issues.
- 3. Note the conditions: did it error on startup, during a shower, after a long idle, during a freeze? Context matters.
- 4. One reset attempt is fine — power off at the disconnect, wait 30 seconds, power back on. If it clears and stays clear, great. If it comes back, stop resetting and call.
