Water and sewer in Whitman — and what it means in your basement

Whitman has no townwide sewer, and that single fact shapes more calls here than anything on the supply side. How Whitman was built — and what is behind the wall

Whitman was a stopping place before it was anything else: the village sat at the halfway point between Boston and New Bedford, where travelers paid a toll, changed horses and ate before going on, and the Toll House Inn that opened on that spot in 1930 is where Ruth Graves Wakefield invented the chocolate chip cookie in 1938. The inn burned on New Year's Eve 1984 and was never rebuilt. Around that crossroads the town filled in with dense turn-of-the-century housing built close to its factories, and it is that stock a plumber meets: galvanized supply and cast iron waste, both narrowing internally with age, almost always partially replaced at some point, so a single house can hold three generations of material joined at fittings nobody wrote down.
