How Halifax was built — and what is behind the wall

Halifax is defined by its ground rather than by any industry. Of roughly eleven thousand acres, about seventeen hundred are open water and a couple of hundred more are swamp, underlain by peat running from two to as much as ten feet deep, and the town sits midway between Boston and Plymouth well away from the factory belt. Peat is the operative word. It compresses, it holds moisture, and it does not behave like the sand and gravel a leaching field is designed around, so disposal systems sized on optimistic assumptions underperform here and below-grade drainage stays under pressure through a wet spring. A fixture that runs slow in April and clears in August is almost never an interior fault; it is the ground outside doing what peat does.
