Water and sewer in Hanson — and what it means in your basement

Hanson takes its drinking water from wells rather than any reservoir, served in part by the regional groundwater works centered on neighboring Abington and in part through the Brockton network, and the town holds a state Water Management Act permit for its own supply. On the waste side there is no comprehensive municipal sewer, so the great majority of properties run private disposal systems under Title 5, and the local Board of Health governs work downstream of the building drain. How Hanson was built — and what is behind the wall

Hanson was the West Parish of Pembroke until it incorporated separately in 1820, and its early economy ran on farming, bog iron and quarrying, with mills along the rivers through the 19th century. Cranberries changed it: by 1885 the town counted well over a hundred farms growing cranberries and strawberries, a large packing house went up in 1912, and the cooperative that became Ocean Spray was founded here in 1930 and headquartered in town until 1977. Bog and wetland shape the plumbing more than the industry does. Land that supported cranberry cultivation holds water, and a high seasonal water table is hard on below-grade fixtures, on sump arrangements and on any disposal system sized for drier ground, which is why trouble here is often seasonal rather than constant and gets misread as a one-off clog.
