Choosing a Plumber on the South Shore

What this page does not do: publish ratings we have not verified, quote anyone's customers, or guess at how other companies are owned. Where a cell shows “—”, we have not confirmed that fact — not that there is nothing to confirm.
How to check a Massachusetts plumbing license
Massachusetts requires anyone who installs, repairs, or alters plumbing to hold an active Master or Journeyman Plumber license from the Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters. Those licenses take documented field experience, formal training, and a state exam. The number is public — you can check any plumber before they set foot in your house, and a company that cannot give you one has answered the question.
Permits
Only a licensed plumber can pull the permit for work that needs one. Unpermitted plumbing turns up at resale, when the buyer's inspector flags it and you pay to redo it properly.
Insurance
Licensed contractors carry liability insurance and workers' comp. If an unlicensed plumber floods your basement or is injured on your property, your homeowner's policy may decline the claim.
Accountability
A license can be suspended or pulled for substandard work. That is the lever you have if a job goes wrong — and it only exists if the person who did the work was licensed.

What to ask any South Shore plumber
Ask these of every company you call — including us. The answers separate a plumbing company from a sales operation.
Is the license number on the truck and on the quote?
Massachusetts issues every master plumber a license number, and a company working legitimately prints it everywhere. Ours is MA Master Plumber License PL #17034-M — ask any company for theirs, then look it up on the state license-verification site.
Who actually shows up — an owner, an employee, or a subcontractor?
The person at your door is the job. Ask whether the company sends its own licensed people or subs the work out, and who answers for it if something goes wrong afterward.
Is the technician paid to sell you more?
Sales quotas and commission plans reward the biggest ticket, not the right fix. Ask directly whether the technician earns more when you spend more. Our answer: no sales quotas.
Do you get a written quote before the work starts?
A price in writing before anyone opens a wall is the difference between a decision and a surprise. A serious company does not mind holding to its number.
Is the arrival window real, and how do they tell you when it slips?
Anyone can promise a window on the phone. Ask how you will actually hear about a delay. Our online booking shows live arrival windows, so you can hold us to them.
Are they comfortable with you getting a second opinion?
