Water and sewer in Cohasset — and what it means in your basement

Cohasset takes its drinking water from the Weir River Water System shared with Hingham and Hull, and roughly three hundred homes here send their wastewater to the treatment plant over in Hull rather than to anything within the town's own borders. The rest of Cohasset is not on that connection, which makes this one of the more mixed towns we work in: a street served by the sewer connection and a street on Title 5 disposal can sit within sight of each other. Being on the coast sharpens everything. Salt air corrodes exposed fittings and outdoor spigots faster than inland, a high water table near the harbor puts steady pressure on below-grade drainage and sump arrangements, and the harbor carries a protected no-discharge designation, so what leaves a property is taken seriously by the town.

How Cohasset was built — and what is behind the wall

Cohasset takes its name from the Conihassett Grant of 1633, made to four Merchant Adventurers of London, and it was part of Scituate before standing on its own; the harbor and the rock ledges rather than any factory shaped how it filled in. That produces a housing stock weighted toward older coastal building and later low-density development rather than dense industrial-era rows. Ledge is the practical complication here: shallow rock makes trenching for service and disposal lines expensive and sometimes routes them in ways a plumber has to work around rather than through. Add the coastal factors -- salt on exposed fittings, a high water table near the harbor, and older shorefront houses originally piped for seasonal use -- and the same job costs more here than two towns inland.
