Water and sewer in Canton — and what it means in your basement

Canton runs on a blend rather than a single source. In its 2023 reporting the town used about 2.6 million gallons a day, roughly fifty-eight percent purchased from the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority and the remaining forty-two percent drawn locally from eight groundwater wells feeding the Sullivan and Moran treatment facilities. That blend is worth knowing in a basement, because regional supply and local well water differ in hardness and in how quickly they scale a tank or a tankless coil. The town is also only partly sewered: the rest of Canton is on individually owned Title 5 disposal systems, and the town has documented plans to extend sewer service further. So a slow fixture is not automatically an interior problem here, and any excavation touching a leaching field needs an installer licensed by the local Board of Health before work starts.

How Canton was built — and what is behind the wall

Canton has been building continuously since the colonial period, and the result is a town where almost nothing can be inferred from an address. A federal-era house that has been modernized four times, a 19th-century one still carrying galvanized supply, and a contemporary build put up to a code that assumed copper can share a single road. Add the town's own split between streets on municipal sewer and properties on private disposal, and two neighbors can face completely different jobs for identical symptoms. The one reliable generalization is that the older the house, the more likely its plumbing is a sequence of partial replacements rather than a system, with each generation of material joined to the last at a fitting that was meant to be temporary.
