Rockland separated from Abington and incorporated in 1874, and it had been a shoe town long before that: a traveling shoemaker set up here in 1793, and by 1832 six factories were turning out twice as many shoes as neighboring Brockton, enough that the town is credited with shoeing roughly half the Union Army. That industry built the housing, and the old mills themselves have since been converted to housing and studio space.
