How Duxbury was built — and what is behind the wall

Duxbury was settled by Myles Standish and John Alden in 1624 and incorporated in 1637, named after Duxbury Woods in Standish's Lancashire home, and it stayed a quiet farming and fishing community through the 17th and 18th centuries before shipbuilding and, much later, residential development arrived. Marshfield was taken out of it in 1640. A town that grew slowly and near the water leaves a housing stock of genuinely old houses along the old roads and the shore, seasonal-era building nearer the beaches, and modern low-density development behind. For plumbing that means long private service runs on large lots, disposal systems on the property rather than at the street, and shorefront houses originally piped for summer occupancy where winter exposure is the characteristic failure.
