How Randolph was built — and what is behind the wall

Randolph became one of the country's leading boot producers, top of the trade by 1850, and the workforce that made it so came from across New England and from Ireland, Italy, Canada and Eastern Europe. Immigration on that scale builds housing fast and close in, and the older core here is exactly that: multi-family and small-lot construction put up quickly for people who had just arrived. Later the town filled in again as a Boston commuter suburb, layering mid-century and modern building over the 19th-century core.
