Hingham draws its drinking water from the Weir River Water System, the municipal system shared with Hull and Cohasset, and it is a sewer-only member of the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority, meaning the regional system takes waste from the sewered parts of town while water comes from the local system. Not every property here is sewered, and that is the distinction that decides most drain calls. On a sewered street a main line backup is a blockage or a break between the house and the municipal line. On an unsewered property the same symptom may be a disposal system reaching the end of its life, and the work falls under Title 5 with the local Board of Health involved before anything downstream of the building drain is touched. Establishing which of the two a house is on is usually the first useful thing anyone does on site.

How Hingham was built — and what is behind the wall
Hingham was settled in 1633 as Bare Cove and incorporated under its present name in 1635, the twelfth town in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and it has never stopped being lived in since. Old Ship Church, built in 1681, is the oldest continuously used house of worship in the country, and North and South Streets, laid out in the 1630s along older footpaths on either side of the now-buried Town Brook, carry one of the richest surviving collections of 17th and 18th-century houses anywhere in the United States. That is not a tourist detail when you open a wall. Houses of that age have been re-plumbed four or five times across three centuries, with lead, galvanized, copper and plastic all appearing in the same building, frequently spliced at fittings nobody recorded, and a buried brook running under the old center keeps groundwater close to a good many of those cellars.
