How Hanson was built — and what is behind the wall
Hanson was the West Parish of Pembroke until it incorporated separately in 1820, and its early economy ran on farming, bog iron and quarrying, with mills along the rivers through the 19th century. Cranberries changed it: by 1885 the town counted well over a hundred farms growing cranberries and strawberries, a large packing house went up in 1912, and the cooperative that became Ocean Spray was founded here in 1930 and headquartered in town until 1977. Bog and wetland shape the plumbing more than the industry does.
