    The Seven-Point Navien Install Checklist

Cutting any one of these is how you end up with a Navien that lockouts every winter.

    Gas line sizing

Calculated for total connected load. Upsized from 1/2" to 3/4" or larger when needed. Verified with a gas pressure test before firing.

    Concentric stainless or PVC venting

Correct diameter, correct termination, within manufacturer max run. No reused B-vent.

    Condensate management

Acidic condensate routed through a neutralizer to an approved drain. Not a bucket, not a tee into a floor drain.

    Isolation / flush valves

Installed on every Navien. Without them, annual descaling becomes a 4-hour job instead of 45 minutes.

    Dedicated 120V electrical

Own circuit, correctly grounded. Not piggybacked off an existing outlet.

    Massachusetts permit

Pulled, inspected, and closed. On record with the town.

    Commissioning & combustion analysis

We verify combustion, flow, and temperature rise before we pack up. Unit registered for the Navien warranty.

    Owner walkthrough

We show you how the unit works, where the filter is, what the annual service involves, and how to use the controller.

    Typical Install Timeline

Remove old unit, run gas/venting/condensate/electrical, mount the Navien, connect, pressure test.

    Step 4
    Commission & inspect

Combustion analysis, flow verification, owner walkthrough, warranty registration, inspector sign-off.

    Common Questions About Navien Installation

What does a proper Navien installation actually include?
A complete Navien tankless or combi install includes: correctly sized gas line (often an upsize from an older 1/2" line), concentric stainless or PVC venting to a code-approved exterior termination, condensate drain with acid-neutralizer, dedicated 120V electrical, isolation/flush valves for annual descaling, Massachusetts permit, inspection, and commissioning with combustion analysis. Anything less and you will be replacing the unit early.
How long does a Navien installation take?
A clean tank-to-tankless conversion in a house with compatible gas and venting is typically a 1-day install. If the gas line needs to be upsized, venting routed through multiple floors, or condensate run to a remote drain, it can take 2 days. We walk the install with you on-site first and tell you the realistic timeline before quoting.
Do I need a bigger gas line for a Navien?
Often yes. Most residential Navien tankless units pull 150–199k BTU. Many older South Shore homes have 1/2" trunk lines that won't deliver that under peak demand — the unit fires but can't hit rated output and the performance disappoints. We size the gas line for the total connected load and upsize where needed.
Can my venting be reused from my old water heater?
Usually no. Navien condensing tankless units require concentric stainless (or Category IV PVC where allowed by code) venting, not the B-vent used on atmospheric gas tanks. Reusing the wrong venting is unsafe and fails inspection. We run new venting on every Navien install.
Do you pull the Massachusetts permit for Navien installs?
Yes, every time. Massachusetts requires a permit for gas appliance install and replacement, and the work has to pass inspection by the local gas inspector. We pull the permit, call the inspector, and finish the job with the paperwork closed. Future buyers of your house will care about that record.
