Drain Cleaning for Boston homes

We clear kitchen, bathroom, and main lines. Where a drain keeps backing up after being cleared, the problem is usually further down the line, and a camera inspection is the honest next step rather than repeated snaking.

Most of our Boston work is in Dorchester, South Boston and the neighborhoods south of downtown, dispatched from our Quincy office minutes up Route 93. Triple-deckers and rowhouses with original cast-iron stacks, shared sewer laterals, and basement water heaters that serve three units at once are the everyday call here.

When to call us

  • More than one fixture draining slowly at the same time
  • Gurgling from a tub or toilet when another fixture drains
  • A drain that clears and then backs up again within weeks
  • Water backing up into a basement floor drain

How does a drain cleaning visit go?

A drain cleaning visit starts with questions, not a cable: which fixtures are slow, whether they are slow at the same time, and whether anything comes back up when another fixture drains. One slow fixture points at its own trap or branch line. Two or more on the same side of the house point at the shared line below them. A basement floor drain or the lowest tub backing up points at the main line to the street.

From there the plumber opens the nearest cleanout, runs a cable sized to that line, and then runs water behind it long enough to confirm the drain holds under real flow rather than just trickling clear. If the cable meets something that feels like a break or an offset rather than a soft clog, or if this line has been cleared before and keeps coming back, we recommend a camera inspection before anything else is sold. You are told what the visit covers and what it will cost before the cable goes in.

Boston calls for drain cleaning are scheduled from our Quincy office, and whichever office sends the crew, the work is done under the same Massachusetts plumbing license.

What decides the cost of drain cleaning?

The cost of a drain clearing is decided by which line is blocked and how we can reach it, far more than by what is blocking it. A kitchen branch cleared through the trap under the sink is the simplest job. A main line is a larger machine, a longer cable and more time, and a house with no accessible cleanout means pulling a toilet or working from the roof vent before the cable can even start.

Three other things move the price: whether the blockage is soft (grease, hair, paper) or hard (roots, scale, a collapsed section), whether a camera inspection is needed to see what the cable found, and whether the line needs hydro jetting rather than cabling because it is coated rather than plugged. A line that needs an excavation is a repair, not a cleaning, and is priced as one after the camera has shown exactly where and how deep.

Where the job needs a permit, it is filed with Boston's plumbing and gas inspector before the work, and the permit fee is set by the town rather than by us.

The $99 service fee sends a licensed technician out to diagnose the problem. Approve the repair on the spot and the fee is not charged at all; decline it and the $99 covers the visit.

Clear it again, or find out why it keeps clogging?

A drain that has been cleared once and stays clear was a clog; a drain that needs clearing every few months has a defect, and the honest next step is a camera, not another cable. Roots entering at a joint, a sag that holds water and collects sludge, scale inside old cast iron, and a crushed or offset section all produce the same slow drain a soft clog does, and all of them come back no matter how well the line is cabled.

The useful test is simple. If the drain clears and the water runs freely for a year or more, you had a clog and nothing else needs doing. If it slows again within weeks, or if the cable brought back mud, roots or pieces of pipe, the line itself is the problem. At that point a camera with a locator tells you exactly where the fault is and how deep, which is the only way to price a spot repair against a longer replacement without guessing.

We have worked in hundreds of Boston homes, and the answer in one house is not always the answer next door: the recommendation follows what the system in front of us is doing, not a rule of thumb.

What should I do before we arrive for a drain cleaning?

Stop running water into the affected line, clear a path to the fixture and to the basement, and find out whether your house has a cleanout. The cleanout is a capped fitting, often near where the main line leaves the basement wall or outside near the foundation. Knowing where it is saves time; not knowing is fine, we will look.

If a fixture is backing up, do not pour chemical drain opener into it. It rarely clears anything below the trap and it sits in the standing water the plumber then has to work in. Move anything stored under the sink or around the floor drain, note which fixtures were slow and in what order, and if the house is on a private septic system rather than town sewer, tell us when you book, because that changes what a backed-up main line means and what we bring.

If anything about your Boston address is hard to find, such as a shared driveway or a basement door around the back, tell the Quincy office when you book so the crew is not hunting for it.
