Rinnai Code 10 — Air Supply or Exhaust Blockage
Your Rinnai isn't getting the airflow it needs to burn cleanly — something is restricting the intake or exhaust. Often a blocked vent outside or a dirty intake.
Code 10 means your Rinnai sensed that combustion air or exhaust isn't moving the way it should. A tankless heater needs a precise amount of air in and exhaust out to burn safely, so when the path is restricted, the unit locks out and posts Code 10 rather than burn incorrectly.
On the South Shore, the most common trigger is the outside vent termination blocked by snow, ice, leaves, or a nest. Inside, it can be a clogged intake, an over-long or improper vent run, or scale and debris restricting airflow through the heat exchanger. We work outside-in from the vent termination.
What causes Code 10
1. Blocked vent or exhaust termination
Snow, ice, leaves, or a nest at the outside termination is the classic cause, especially after a storm. Clearing it often restores the unit.
2. Restricted or dirty intake
A clogged air intake or filter starves combustion and reads as a blockage. Quick to check and clean.
3. Improper or too-long venting
A vent run that is undersized, too long, or has too many elbows chokes airflow. Common after a DIY or non-standard install.
4. Scale or debris in the heat exchanger
Buildup between the heat-exchanger fins restricts airflow from the inside. A descale/cleaning clears it.
What you can safely check first
- Look at the vent termination outside and clear any snow, leaves or bird nest you can reach safely from the ground.
- Check the air intake for lint, dust, or anything stacked against it.
- One power cycle is reasonable after clearing an obvious blockage.
When to stop and call us
If the vent is clear and Code 10 returns, the intake, the venting run, or the heat exchanger needs a professional look. Running a unit that cannot breathe is how a combustion problem becomes a safety problem.

Rinnai Code 10 FAQs
What does Rinnai Code 10 mean?
Code 10 indicates an air supply or exhaust blockage. The unit detected that combustion air or exhaust is not flowing correctly and locked out, because burning gas without the right airflow is unsafe.
What causes Rinnai Code 10?
Most often a blocked vent or exhaust termination outside — snow, ice, leaves, or a nest. It can also be a clogged intake, improper or over-long venting, or scale and debris restricting airflow through the heat exchanger.
Can I clear Code 10 myself?
You can safely check the outside vent termination for an obvious blockage and clear snow, leaves, or a nest, then power-cycle the unit. If the vent is clear and Code 10 returns, the intake, venting, or heat exchanger needs a professional look.
How much does Code 10 repair cost?
The $99 service fee sends a licensed technician out to diagnose the problem. Approve the repair on the spot and the fee is not charged at all; decline it and the $99 covers the visit. Clearing a vent or intake is inexpensive; a venting correction or a heat-exchanger cleaning is quoted after we diagnose it.
