Why Does My Kitchen Drain Keep Clogging?

Most recurring kitchen drain clogs are not random. On service calls around Quincy, Braintree, and the South Shore, we usually find a drain line that has been slowly narrowing for months from grease, soap residue, food scraps, and coffee grounds. A bottle of drain opener might punch a small hole through the blockage, but it does not remove the buildup lining the pipe. That is why the sink seems better for a week or two and then backs up again the next time the dishwasher runs.

The pattern to watch for is the interval. A one-off clog from a dropped bottle cap or a wad of vegetable peel clears and stays clear. A clog that returns every few weeks, and returns a little sooner each time, is a pipe whose inside diameter is shrinking. Nothing you pour down the sink changes the diameter of the pipe. Only cleaning the pipe wall does.

Start under the sink, but do not stop there

Another common issue is right under the sink. The P-trap and the short horizontal arm going into the wall collect sludge fast, especially in homes where grease or starchy food gets rinsed down regularly. If the clog is isolated there, taking the trap apart and cleaning it can solve the immediate problem. But when the line is slow even after the trap is cleaned, that usually means the restriction is farther down the branch drain and needs proper cable work or hydro-jetting, depending on the condition of the piping.

Two other things under the sink deserve a look. A garbage disposal that has not been run with enough water leaves ground food in the trap arm, where it hardens. And a dishwasher drain hose that loops down instead of up to a high loop or air gap lets dirty water sit in the hose and drain back into the sink, which is why some kitchens only back up when the dishwasher empties.

Why grease is the usual suspect in New England kitchens

Grease goes down the drain as a warm liquid and cools into a solid on the first cold section of pipe it reaches. In an older South Shore home that is often the branch line running through an unheated basement or an outside wall, where the pipe is coldest. Each rinse adds a thin layer. Running hot water afterwards does not remove the layer, it just moves the softest part of it a little further along, which is why a kitchen line can clog at a point well past the trap where no plunger reaches.

Coffee grounds, rice, pasta, and eggshell fragments make it worse because they stick to the grease instead of washing through. Scraping plates into the trash and wiping greasy pans with a paper towel before washing does more for a kitchen drain than any product you can buy.

What a camera shows that guessing cannot

When a kitchen line has clogged more than twice, we want to see it before we clear it. A drain camera shows whether the pipe is coated with grease, whether a section has sagged and holds standing water, whether a fitting was installed at the wrong angle, or whether an older cast iron section has rough, scaled walls that catch everything. Each of those has a different fix. Grease responds to hydro-jetting. A sagging section needs to be re-hung or replaced. Scaled cast iron may need to be descaled or, if it is thin, replaced. Cabling through a sag or a bad fitting clears it today and guarantees the call next month.

We also confirm the pipe can take the method before we use it. Hydro-jetting is the right tool for grease, but not on a pipe a camera has shown to be cracked or badly corroded.

What you can do yourself, and when to stop

For homeowners, the best DIY move is prevention: scrape plates into the trash, avoid pouring grease into the sink, and flush the drain periodically with very hot water and dish soap. Run the disposal with a strong stream of cold water and keep it running for a few seconds after the grinding sound stops. Check that the dishwasher hose rises to a high loop under the counter.

If the sink is draining slowly, gurgling, or backing up when the dishwasher empties, that is the point to stop experimenting with chemicals. Repeated chemical use can damage older piping and makes the line harder and less safe to service, because whoever opens that trap next is working in caustic water.
