    What's Clogging Your Bathroom Sink

Hair + toothpaste + soap scum

The classic bathroom sink combo. Hair catches on the pop-up stopper; toothpaste and soap bind the mat together in the P-trap below.

    Pop-up stopper buildup

The stopper mechanism itself is often the choke point. Sometimes all it takes is pulling and cleaning it.

    Old chrome trap corrosion

In older bathrooms, the chrome P-trap can corrode internally and narrow over time. Replace the trap if it's at that stage.

    Branch line grease/scum buildup

If multiple bathroom fixtures are slow, the branch drain serving them all is the issue. We locate and clear.

    Bathroom Sink Backing Up?

Don't reach for chemical drain cleaner. Call a licensed plumber for a fix that won't damage the pipes.

Clogged Bathroom Sink — Common Questions

How much does clearing a clogged bathroom sink cost?
Our $99 service fee applies toward the work. A standard bathroom sink clog — hair, toothpaste, and soap scum in the trap — is a quick visit. If the clog is deeper in the branch line, we quote that work before continuing.
Why does my bathroom sink drain slowly?
Toothpaste + hair + soap buildup in the P-trap is the #1 cause. Pop-up stoppers catch hair and the buildup slowly narrows the pipe. In older homes, the trap and drain piping can also corrode internally, making the problem chronic.
Can I fix a bathroom sink clog myself?
Often yes for small clogs: pull the pop-up stopper and clean the hair off it (twist counterclockwise or lift straight up depending on model). If that doesn't fix it, you need to disassemble the P-trap under the sink — doable for a handy homeowner, but messy. If you're not comfortable, it's a 15–30 minute job for us.
Should I use a chemical drain cleaner?
No. Chemical drain cleaners damage pipes (especially older chrome traps and cast iron), can harm septic systems, and frequently don't actually clear hair. They're also dangerous if they splash back. A mechanical clearing is cheaper over time and won't damage anything.
My bathroom sink AND tub are both slow — is that different?
Yes — if both fixtures are slow, the problem is in the branch drain that serves both, not the individual sink. That's a different diagnostic and a slightly different fix. Still straightforward, just deeper in the system.
