Kids toys, wipes, tampon products, or anything non-dissolving can lodge in the toilet trap. A home auger often just pushes it further.

What causes a clogged toilet, and how does a plumber fix it?
A clogged toilet is usually an object or a dense wad of paper lodged in the trapway inside the bowl, and a plumber fixes it with a closet auger that reaches through the trap or, when the auger finds nothing, by cabling the closet bend and the branch line behind the toilet.
A plunger moves water; it cannot pull a toy, a wipe or a packed paper plug back out of the trapway. The closet auger is built for that trap and protects the porcelain. If the auger passes freely and the toilet still fills, the blockage is past the toilet in the larger drain line, which is cleared with a drain cable from the closet flange or a cleanout. A toilet that clogs every week with ordinary use has a different problem, a partial obstruction or a bowl that was never adequate, and we say so instead of clearing the same clog again.
What do we check first on a clogged toilet call?
The trapway, with a closet auger
The first pass tells us whether something is lodged in the toilet itself. Most single-toilet clogs end here.
What the water level does as it drains
A bowl that drains slowly to a normal level has a partial clog; a bowl that drains fully but refills high points past the toilet. We watch this before choosing a tool.
Whether the tub or shower nearby reacts to a flush
If flushing pushes water up in the tub, the clog is in the branch or the main, and we go in with a cable rather than auger the toilet again.
The flange and the base
Water at the base after flushing, or a toilet that rocks, means the wax seal or the flange is failing. It is a different repair and we point it out before leaving.
When is a clogged toilet not a drain-cleaning job?
Three toilet symptoms get reported as clogs and are something else. Each is real work, and each belongs to a different page than this one.
The toilet runs, rocks or leaks at the base
Fill valves, flappers, wax rings and flanges are not drain cleaning. We handle them, but the parts and the work are different and they are quoted as toilet repair.
Sewage comes up in the tub, shower or basement floor drain when you flush
Other fixtures receiving what the toilet sends is a main sewer line blockage. It is diagnosed with a camera, and roots or a broken pipe are sewer line service.
A stain or drip on the ceiling under the bathroom
Water in the ceiling below a toilet almost always comes from a failed wax ring or a cracked closet flange, not from the clog. It is traced and fixed as ceiling leak repair.
What should I do before the visit?
- If the bowl is full, do not flush again. Close the supply stop under the tank by turning it clockwise so an overflow cannot repeat.
- Pick up bath mats and move the trash can and anything stored beside the toilet; the technician works kneeling at the bowl.
- Tell us what went down if you know. A child's toy, a cleaning wipe or a so-called flushable product changes the tool we bring.
- Say whether any other drain in the house has been slow this week; one sentence tells us whether this is a toilet clog or a sewer call.
