Navien E003 — Ignition Failure
The unit tried to light and couldn't. Locked out to protect itself. Here's what's usually wrong and what we do about it.
What E003 Actually Means
E003 is Navien's ignition-failure lockout. The unit calls for hot water, the combustion sequence starts (pre-purge, spark, gas valve opens), and the flame rod should detect flame within a few seconds. If it doesn't — across 3–5 attempts, depending on the model — the unit shuts down and posts E003 to protect itself.
Think of E003 as the unit saying: “I tried to light. I can't confirm I did. Something isn't right and I'm not going to keep trying.” That's a good behavior — it prevents gas dumping — but it means something upstream needs fixing.
The 5 Common Causes of E003
1. Low or no gas supply pressure
Gas valve closed. Propane tank empty. Undersized gas line that drops pressure under load. Utility side issue. This is the first thing we check.
2. Dirty or failed flame rod
The flame rod detects flame via ionization current. If it's fouled with oxide or mounting is loose, the unit thinks ignition failed even when flame is present. Clean or replace.
3. Faulty igniter
The spark igniter itself can fail or the wiring to it can corrode. Replace the igniter assembly if the spark is weak or absent.
4. Venting obstruction
Blocked vent termination (leaves, snow, mesh bird guard clogged, ice) prevents proper combustion air and draft. Inspect the termination point outside.
5. Gas valve issue
Less common than the above, but the gas valve can fail internally and not open properly on command. Requires replacement.
What to Check Before You Call
- 1. Is the gas valve on the line to the unit open? (Handle should be parallel to the pipe.)
- 2. Is the gas service active? (Stove/other gas appliance working? Propane tank not empty?)
- 3. Is the vent termination outside clear? (No ice dam, no blockage, no mesh clogged.)
- 4. One reset attempt: power off at the disconnect, wait 30 seconds, power back on. If E003 returns, stop and call.
Do NOT open the unit, clean the flame rod yourself, or probe the gas valve. That's licensed gas work.
