Navien E012 — Flame Loss During Operation

E012 is flame loss during operation. Unlike E003 (which is a failure to ignite), E012 means the unit DID ignite successfully — the burner was running — and then lost the flame partway through the call for hot water. The flame-rod stopped detecting flame while the gas valve was still open, which triggers a safety shutdown.

Most common causes: (1) dirty or fouled flame rod — the most common cause by a wide margin; (2) unstable gas pressure (supply drops during operation); (3) combustion air/venting issue — a partial vent blockage can destabilize the flame; (4) condensing combustion issue where water vapor fouls the flame rod more aggressively; (5) less commonly, a failing gas valve that closes intermittently.

Indirectly, yes. Heavy scale in the heat exchanger reduces water flow, which changes the combustion dynamic. The unit can't modulate correctly and flame stability suffers. This is one reason we push annual descaling — it prevents chain-reaction issues like this.

The lockout itself is a safety feature — the unit shut down correctly. The concern is whether the underlying cause (unstable combustion) points to something more serious like gas pressure issues or venting faults. That's why we diagnose root cause, not just clear the code.
