Navien E012 — Flame Loss During Operation
The unit lit, ran briefly, and then lost the flame. The flame rod couldn't confirm combustion was still happening, so the unit shut down to protect itself.
E012 is flame loss during operation, and the difference from E003 is the whole diagnosis. E003 means the unit tried to light and never detected a flame at all. E012 means it lit successfully, ran for seconds or minutes, and then lost the flame.
Something destabilized while the burner was running rather than while it was starting, which points at combustion stability — a fouled flame rod, gas pressure dropping under load, or a venting and combustion-air problem — rather than at ignition hardware.
What causes E012
1. Dirty / fouled flame rod
The dominant cause. Over time, combustion byproducts coat the flame rod and its ability to sense flame degrades. A cleaning — or replacement — usually solves it.
2. Gas pressure drops under load
If gas supply can't hold pressure when the burner is running at full output, the flame destabilizes. Often a gas sizing issue that was masked until peak demand.
3. Combustion air / venting issue
Partial vent obstruction, a damper that isn't opening fully, or a termination hood full of debris can destabilize combustion even when the unit initially lights.
4. Heat-exchanger scale
Scale reduces flow, which changes the combustion dynamic. Chronic skipped descaling shows up as repeat E012s.
5. Gas valve intermittent fault
Less common, but a valve that closes briefly under certain conditions will manifest as flame loss. Replacement resolves it.
What you can safely check first
- Confirm other gas appliances in the house are working normally, which separates a unit fault from a supply problem.
- Note when the flame drops out: at startup, under heavy demand, or when another gas appliance fires. That timing narrows the cause more than anything else you can check.
- One reset is reasonable. Repeated resets on a unit that lights and then drops out are not.
When to stop and call us
E012 that repeats needs gas pressure measured under load and the flame rod inspected, which is licensed work. The lockout itself is the unit behaving correctly; the question is what made combustion unstable, and that is what we diagnose.

What does Navien error code E012 mean?
E012 is flame loss during operation. Unlike E003 (which is a failure to ignite), E012 means the unit DID ignite successfully — the burner was running — and then lost the flame partway through the call for hot water. The flame-rod stopped detecting flame while the gas valve was still open, which triggers a safety shutdown.
What causes E012?
Most common causes: (1) dirty or fouled flame rod — the most common cause by a wide margin; (2) unstable gas pressure (supply drops during operation); (3) combustion air/venting issue — a partial vent blockage can destabilize the flame; (4) condensing combustion issue where water vapor fouls the flame rod more aggressively; (5) less commonly, a failing gas valve that closes intermittently.
Can a scale buildup cause E012?
Indirectly, yes. Heavy scale in the heat exchanger reduces water flow, which changes the combustion dynamic. The unit can't modulate correctly and flame stability suffers. This is one reason we push annual descaling — it prevents chain-reaction issues like this.
Is E012 a safety issue?
The lockout itself is a safety feature — the unit shut down correctly. The concern is whether the underlying cause (unstable combustion) points to something more serious like gas pressure issues or venting faults. That's why we diagnose root cause, not just clear the code.
