Navien Error Code E046
Abnormality in limit control — a safety limit device has opened or cannot be read.
E046 reports a problem with a limit control — one of the safety devices whose whole job is to shut the unit down before something gets too hot. The code is the safety system working. What matters is why the limit tripped, because the limit itself is rarely the underlying fault.
What causes E046
1. Restricted water flow
A clogged inlet filter, a partially closed isolation valve, or scale narrowing the heat exchanger all reduce the water available to carry heat away. Temperatures climb, the limit opens, and the unit stops.
2. Scale in the heat exchanger
Hard water leaves mineral deposits that insulate the exchanger surface. On a unit that has never been descaled this is the usual root cause, and a flush addresses it properly.
3. A failed limit device or its wiring
The limit can fail open or its harness can break, so the board reads a fault with no real over-temperature. This gets verified by measurement rather than assumed.
4. Air trapped in the system
Air pockets after a repair or a refill stop water moving through the exchanger even when every valve is open. Purging the loop resolves it.
What you can safely check first
- Confirm every water isolation valve at the unit is fully open, including ones touched during recent work.
- Check the cold-water inlet filter screen for debris if you can reach it without tools.
- Note whether the code appears only under heavy hot-water demand, which points at flow rather than a failed part.
When to stop and call us
If the code returns after one reset, the unit needs a flow check and almost always a descale. Repeatedly resetting a unit that keeps hitting a safety limit just delays the fix and is hard on the exchanger.

Navien E046 FAQs
What does Navien error code E046 mean?
It is a limit control fault. A safety device that guards against over-temperature has opened, or the board cannot read it properly, so the unit shuts down. The limit is usually doing its job rather than failing.
What causes E046 most often?
Reduced water flow and scale in the heat exchanger. A clogged inlet filter, a valve that is not fully open, or years of hard water without a descale all raise temperatures until the limit opens.
Can I just reset it?
One reset is reasonable, and if it clears and stays clear the cause was probably transient. If E046 returns, the unit is hitting a genuine limit and needs a flow check and a descale rather than another reset.
Does a descale fix E046?
Often, yes, when scale is what restricted flow. We confirm the cause before recommending it, because a failed limit device or a closed valve produces the same code and a flush would not address either.
