Navien E048 — Gas Pressure Fault
Your Navien isn't getting the steady gas pressure it needs for stable combustion. On propane systems this often means a low tank or a regulator issue.
What E048 Means
E048 means the unit detected gas pressure outside the range it needs to fire cleanly. A tankless heater demands a lot of gas quickly when it runs; if the supply can't hold pressure under that load, the unit protects itself and posts the fault.
On propane (LPG) systems — common on the South Shore — the usual causes are a low or nearly empty tank or a regulator that isn't keeping up. On natural gas it points to supply pressure, the regulator, or gas-line sizing. Either way, gas pressure and gas components are licensed-technician work, never DIY.
Common Causes of E048
1. Low propane tank
On LPG systems, a low or empty tank is the first thing to rule out. Pressure sags as the tank drops, and the unit flags E048. Check your tank level before anything else.
2. Regulator or pressure-reducing valve
A propane regulator or gas-pressure-reducing valve that can't hold steady pressure under the heater's demand will trigger the fault. This is a licensed-tech repair.
3. Gas-line sizing or a partly closed valve
An undersized gas line or a supply valve that is not fully open starves the unit under peak demand — a common issue after conversions or after adding gas appliances.
4. Gas valve or flow sensor
Internal gas-valve or sensor faults can misread pressure. We verify supply pressure at the unit before replacing internal parts.
