Navien Error Code E438
Abnormality in the circulation pump — the recirculation pump is not operating as expected.
E438 appears on Navien models with built-in recirculation, the feature that keeps hot water waiting at the tap instead of making you run it. The board is reporting that the internal circulation pump is not doing what it was told. Hot water often still works, which is why this one gets ignored until the recirculation stops entirely.
What causes E438
1. A stuck or failed check valve
Recirculation depends on check valves directing water the right way. A valve stuck open or closed makes the pump read as abnormal even when the pump itself is fine.
2. Air in the recirculation loop
A pump moving air rather than water draws the wrong current and reports a fault. Common after plumbing work, a water shutoff, or a system refill. Purging the loop clears it.
3. Closed or partly closed return line valves
If the dedicated return line or its valves were closed during other work and never reopened, the pump has nowhere to push. Worth checking before any part is condemned.
4. A failing pump
Pumps do wear out, particularly on hard water where the impeller scales. Real, but it is the last thing to conclude rather than the first.
What you can safely check first
- Confirm the hot water itself still works — E438 usually affects recirculation, not the burner.
- Check that any valves on the recirculation return line are open, especially after recent plumbing work.
- Power the unit off at the disconnect for thirty seconds and back on. One reset is reasonable.
When to stop and call us
If the code persists, the loop needs to be purged and the check valves and pump tested in place. That order matters: most E438s we see are a check valve or trapped air, not a dead pump, and replacing the pump first is an expensive way to not fix it.
