Viessmann EF — Flame signal fault during start-up
Flame signal fault during start-up — the flame was lost or never stabilized at ignition.
EF is close cousin to F4. The difference is where in the sequence it goes wrong: with EF the boiler is reporting a flame signal problem during start-up, so the flame either failed to stabilize or was lost immediately after lighting. In practice the causes overlap heavily, and so does the order in which a plumber checks them.
What causes EF
1. Ignition or sensing electrode condition
Carbon buildup, a cracked insulator, or a gap that has drifted out of specification. The flame lights and then is not read reliably, so the board shuts it down.
2. A damaged or loose electrode lead
The sensing signal is tiny. A chafed lead or a poor connection is enough to lose it, and it is easy to miss on a visual check.
3. Gas supply or pressure fluctuation
A flame that lights and then starves cannot stabilize. Worth checking when other gas appliances in the house are also behaving oddly.
4. A condensate or flue restriction
The same blockages behind F4 and F5 can destabilize a new flame, which is why the condensate route gets checked here too.
What you can safely check first
- Check the condensate line exactly as you would for F4: the pump and trap first, then any run through unheated space for freezing.
- Confirm other gas appliances work normally.
- One reset is reasonable. Repeated resets on a boiler that lights and drops out are not.
When to stop and call us
EF that repeats needs the electrodes, the sensing lead and gas pressure measured. This is licensed work inside the sealed combustion circuit and is a routine part of a proper boiler service.

What does Viessmann fault code EF mean?
A flame signal fault during start-up. The boiler either could not stabilize the flame after lighting or lost the signal immediately, so it locked out rather than continue.
How is EF different from F4?
They are close relatives. F4 is no flame signal on the ignition attempt; EF points at the flame failing or not being read during start-up. The causes overlap heavily and so does the diagnosis.
Is EF caused by a dirty sensor?
Frequently. Carbon on the electrodes, a cracked insulator, or a drifted gap all interfere with a signal that is very small to begin with. Cleaning and gapping is a normal part of an annual service.
Should I keep resetting it?
One reset is reasonable, especially after clearing a frozen condensate pipe. Beyond that you are asking a boiler to keep attempting ignition it cannot complete, which is worth stopping and diagnosing.
