Viessmann Error Code F2

Temperature limiter has tripped — the boiler shut down on over-temperature.

4.8 stars on Google · 385 reviews across Quincy and AbingtonMA Lic. PL #17034-MQuincy & South Shore

F2 means the temperature limiter has opened and stopped the boiler. It is a safety device doing exactly what it exists to do, and the useful question is not how to clear the code but why the boiler got hot enough to trip it. On a Vitodens that is nearly always about water not moving properly through the heat exchanger.

What causes F2

1. Low system pressure or low water content

A boiler short of water cannot carry heat away from the exchanger. Pressure falls over time on systems with a slow leak or a tired expansion vessel, and F2 is often the first symptom a homeowner notices.

2. A failed or seized circulator pump

If the pump is not moving water, the exchanger heats with nowhere for that heat to go. The limiter opens within minutes of the burner firing.

3. Air trapped in the system

Air pockets block circulation as effectively as a dead pump, and they are common after a refill, a radiator change, or any work that drained part of the system.

4. A closed valve or blocked flow

An isolation valve left closed after work, a stuck zone valve, or heavy sludge in the heat exchanger all restrict flow enough to trip the limiter.

What you can safely check first

  • Check the system pressure gauge. If it reads well below the normal band marked on the gauge, that alone can explain F2.
  • Feel whether radiators heat evenly, which hints at circulation rather than the boiler itself.
  • One reset is reasonable. If F2 returns quickly, stop resetting it.

When to stop and call us

F2 that returns needs a plumber, because the limiter is protecting the appliance from a real over-temperature. Repeated resets put heat into an exchanger that already cannot shed it, and the exchanger is the expensive part.

Viessmann F2 FAQs

What does Viessmann fault code F2 mean?

The temperature limiter has tripped and shut the boiler down on over-temperature. It is a safety response, and the real question is why the boiler overheated — usually water not circulating properly.

What causes F2 most often?

Low system pressure, a failed circulator pump, or air trapped in the system. All three stop heat leaving the exchanger, so temperatures climb until the limiter opens.

Can I reset a Viessmann F2 myself?

One reset is reasonable, and checking the pressure gauge is sensible. If the code returns quickly, stop and call a licensed plumber, because you would be repeatedly heating an exchanger that cannot shed the heat.

Is F2 an emergency?

It leaves you without heat, which in a New England winter we treat as urgent. It is not a gas-leak emergency. If you ever smell gas, leave the area and call the gas utility or 911 before calling us.
