Viessmann Error Code F4

No flame signal — the boiler tried to light and could not confirm a flame.

4.8 stars on Google · 385 reviews across Quincy and AbingtonMA Lic. PL #17034-MQuincy & South Shore

F4 means the boiler went through its ignition sequence and never confirmed a flame, so it locked out rather than keep sending gas to a burner that is not lit. It is the most common Viessmann lockout, and on the South Shore it has a strong seasonal pattern: a cold snap arrives and the condensate line freezes.

What causes F4

1. A frozen or blocked condensate line

A condensing boiler drains acidic water continuously. When that line runs through an unheated basement, a garage, or outside, a hard freeze blocks it, the boiler detects the backup and refuses to fire. Very common here in January and February.

2. Dirty or worn ignition and sensing electrodes

The electrodes both light the gas and confirm the flame. Carbon buildup or a drifted gap means the flame either does not establish or is not detected. A standard part of an annual service.

3. A gas supply problem

A closed or partly closed gas valve, work on the utility side, or an undersized supply under load all starve the burner. If other gas appliances misbehave at the same time, this moves up the list.

4. A blocked flue or air intake

Debris, a nest, or snow across an external terminal disrupts the air the burner needs and prevents a stable flame.

What you can safely check first

  • In cold weather, look for the condensate pipe and check whether it is frozen. Thawing it gently with warm — never boiling — water resolves a good share of winter F4s.
  • Confirm other gas appliances in the house are working, which separates a boiler fault from a supply problem.
  • Check the outside flue terminal is clear of snow, leaves or nesting.
  • One reset is reasonable after clearing an obvious cause.

When to stop and call us

If there is no frozen condensate and no obvious blockage, or if F4 returns after one reset, it needs a plumber. Electrodes, gas pressure and the flame sensing circuit all need measuring rather than guessing.

Viessmann F4 FAQs

What does Viessmann fault code F4 mean?

No flame signal. The boiler ran its ignition sequence and could not confirm a flame, so it locked out instead of continuing to deliver gas. It is the most common Viessmann lockout.

Why does F4 keep happening in cold weather?

Almost always a frozen condensate line. A condensing boiler drains acidic water continuously, and where that pipe runs somewhere unheated a hard freeze blocks it and stops the boiler firing.

Can I thaw the condensate pipe myself?

Yes, carefully. Warm water poured along the pipe, never boiling water, and never an open flame. If it refreezes repeatedly the pipe run needs rerouting or insulating, which is worth fixing properly.

The boiler lights then locks out again — same code?

That pattern points at flame detection rather than ignition: the burner lights but the signal is not read reliably, usually dirty electrodes. It needs measuring, and it is a normal part of an annual service.
